Cherish Today!

I was looking through the children’s books in the City College bookstore the other day. I’m a big kid at heart, and I also have a beautiful niece and nephew who I love to buy books for. Children’s books are always so beautiful and positive – many adults would probably benefit from reading a child’s book every now and then!

Children experience a lot more negative talk than we may realize – they’re often being dictated to, threatened and stifled in many ways...

Pamper Yourself with... Perlier Honey Bath Creme

Posted by 'Funlayo on Saturday, November 14, 2009 In : Pamper Yourself

I pray you’ve had a great week. I’m finally able to decompress a little bit after having taken the GRE yesterday – one of the many steps in the grad school application process I mentioned in the last post. Before taking any big test or taking any important step in life, it’s important to RELAX! Between studying and other preparation, the stress level can get pretty high and going into a test or other important event with frazzled nerves is a no-no.

In addition to a positive though...

Quote for the Day: Overcoming

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 In : Inspiration

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it."

I came across this quote by Helen Keller today and it struck me – hard. I woke up not feeling 100% well physically, but I decided that I was going to push through and accomplish the things that I had set to accomplish for the day. Now, my little sore throat and headache was nothing in comparison to the physical hardships faced by Keller and others, but it was a small sampling of my own power and drive to ov...

Coming Over the PhD Application Mountain

Posted by 'Funlayo on Thursday, November 5, 2009 In : Information

Blessed greetings to all of you! I trust you’ve been staying busy in my absence – I pray you’ve been staying positive as well. I have been “on my grind” recently; I hope you’ve taken the time to catch up on all the posts you may have missed.

They say that anything that is worth having takes a good deal of work and I am certainly finding that to be true especially as I go through the process of applying to PhD programs. If any of you are thinking of applying, know that it i...

Pamper Yourself with... Laughter

Posted by 'Funlayo on Saturday, October 24, 2009 In : Pamper Yourself

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to laugh! There’s nothing better to me than to spend time with my mom, my sister or other people in my life who I can laugh and share great energy with. Aside from being just plain fun, laughter is actually quite healthy – hey, where do you think the saying “laughter is the best medicine” came from?

As mentioned in this article on stress management, laughter increases some “positive” hormones in our bodies, like endorphins, and decreases...

Take a Look Back

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 In : Information

Staying positive often means keeping your eyes on the prize ahead of you and not looking back too much, but there’s one time when looking back is quite important: after you’ve had a “movement,” if you get my drift. It’s not usually something we discuss in polite company, but the state of your “droppings” says a lot about your overall health and it’s very difficult to be positive if you’re not healthy!

According to many sources, including one of my favorites, Dr. Oz, mos...

Pamper Yourself with... Opulent Spirit Bath Essentials

Posted by 'Funlayo on Sunday, October 18, 2009 In : Pamper Yourself

Happy Sunday! I don’t know what’s going on where you are, but it’s windy and rainy here in New York – the perfect type of day to stay in and do some pampering! You all know how much I love baths and I’ve found a fantastic product like that makes one of my favorite pastimes even more enjoyable.

I discovered this little gem while at the Circle of Sisters Expo with my mother last weekend. I smelled their Mango Melon body butter and immediately fell in love! The scent was heavenly...

Are You a Tourist or a Native?

Riding public transportation in New York can be a real trip! While I’m certainly looking forward to (finally!) getting my driver’s license and getting a car, public transportation is environmentally friendly and it gives me a lot of time to think and reflect on things. Another thing riding the buses and subways enables me to do is people watch – and watch I do.

One thing that always strikes me i...

Pamper Yourself with... Sleep

Posted by 'Funlayo on Sunday, October 11, 2009 In : Pamper Yourself

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Sleep is cheap, easy and doesn’t require any special equipment but according to the National Sleep Foundation, many people don’t get enough sleep. I know I’m guilty of cheating myself out of adequate sleep at times. With all of our busy lives it may seem like there aren’t enough hours in the day but we have to make a concentrated effort to make sure we get enough sleep because not getting enough rest can be more detrimental than w...

You never know Who's Listening

Posted by 'Funlayo on Friday, October 9, 2009 In : Reflection

Reflective Question:
Have you ever overheard someone saying something negative about you? How did you handle the situation?

Let’s be honest: most of us gain some satisfaction out of talking about people once in a while. It may not be enlightened but it’s the truth. Every now and then, talking about the person we saw acting wild on the train, the “cat lady” that lives down the street or the “bad” child that made a scene in the store gives us some small bit of sadistic pleasure a...
