I pray you’ve been enjoying this Black History Month as much as I have and that you’ve learned at least a few things you didn’t know before from my posts on the Facebook page and Twitter and from the great widget on the site that I snagged from Biography.com’s wonderful Black History site. It’s unfortunate, but observing Black History Month has become somewhat of a mixed bag for me. I personally commemorate and cherish Black history every day, because as ...

You're invited to Fast with 'Funlayo

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 In : Inspiration

Alaafia and blessed greetings to you, I pray you are well and feeling bright as you read this – I certainly am! I’m still in the ritual mourning period for my birth father, but I am remembering him with love and laughter and I have already dreamt of him, which is quite comforting. In the midst of my bereavement, I have received some exciting news that I know my father would be proud of: I’ve been offered admission to Harvard University’s PhD program in African and African America...

1980                                        2009

This post is dedicated to the memory of my father John E. Wood
September 13, 1950 - January 18, 2010

This New Year, 2010, has certainly gotten off to a dichotomous start for many of us, hasn’t it? There have been immense blessings on one hand, immense tumult and melancholy on the other. While I and those of you reading this are blessed in that we’re still here, still in our right minds, still able to try again to achieve whatever ...

Hearts Out to Haiti

Posted by 'Funlayo on Thursday, January 14, 2010 In : Information

Words cannot express the shock, awe and sadness I feel in the aftermath of the earthquake that rocked Haiti yesterday. Please, take a moment of silence and send some deep heart energy and prayer to Haiti and those in the Haitian Diaspora worldwide. Events like this show us how fragile and precious life is and how things can change in the blink of an eye. 40 seconds is all it took to change the course of thousands of people’s lives forever. 40 seconds is all it will take for you to help,...

Happy 2010!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Saturday, January 2, 2010 In : Inspiration

I pray that 2010 has gotten off to a wonderful start for all of you. For the first time in my life, I spent New Year’s Eve alone at home and it was a wonderful, wonderful thing! I partook in a delicious candlelight dinner, a cleansing white bath and a whole lot of prayer and reflection. 2009 was a year of a lot of accomplishments for me – including launching Ase Ire! – and I look forward to more great things in this new decade.

I found a little poem by Edgar Guest that captures my ...

Let Us Not Engage the World Hurriedly...

This holy day season has been a lot of fun for me indeed, and I pray that it has for you as well. I enjoyed some Hanukkah festivities, participated in a beautiful candlelight ceremony on the Winter Solstice, will commune with my largely Christian family on Christmas day today and am looking forward to lighting the Kinara for Kwanzaa tomorrow. It's beautiful when we can all join together and see that our sameness and the values and principles we share far outweigh...

Help Me Help Somone this Holy-day Season

My Ghanaian brother, John, and me in Elmina, Ghana -- 2005

I pray this day finds you all well and bright as we move further into this season of endings, beginnings and much reflection. I have been extremely introspective over the past few weeks and one of the things that continually comes into my mind is the thought of all those who are less fortunate than myself. At this time of year, many tend to increase their charitable giving – both temporal and monetary – and, while it is a wonde...

Blessed greetings! I pray you have all been well this week and that those of you up here in the North East where I am have been staying warm as the temperatures have dropped. The end of the year is approaching and people of all faiths and backgrounds are preparing to celebrate their various winter holidays and usher in the New Year. Is it really about to be 2010?! I remember when the world was anticipating the changes everyone thought would take place with the comin...

2009 Winter Giveaway

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 In : Information

I'm excited to introduce Ase Ire's second giveaway! The first one was a great success with more than 100 entries in our first month and now, as the year draws to a close I'd like to engage our readers old and new. Giving brings me  such joy and most everyone is excited by the prospect of winning something so it's a good situation for all! I haven't decided what the prize will be just yet, but since I like to give choices, it'll more than likely be a choice of gift certificates, products that ...

Odu Reflection: The Blessings Will Come!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Sunday, November 29, 2009 In : Reflection

With Thanksgiving just behind us and the end of the year approaching, I and many people around the country and the world are reflecting on the past year and taking inventory of our blessings. With all this gratitude and good tidings abounding, I was reminded of a quote that seems quite incongruous with those feelings:

"Over generosity is often met with crass ingratitude"

This is a refrain from the odù Ifá Ogunda-Obara, which I recently reviewed with my Master-Teacher Awo Ifakunle....
