With Respect for Our Mother

Posted by Funlayo on Monday, April 22, 2013, In : Reflection

Blessed greetings and Happy Earth Day 2013!

The issues of environmental protection and preservation are particularly important to me. One of my dearest friends even regards me as something of a fanatic in that regard and you know... I can't disagree with her! *laugh* As I spoke of in this post, Ifa-Orisa practitioners – as well as practitioners of many other earth-based and indigenous religions – regard the earth not as a "thing" over which we have dominion and which is simply there for o...

Standing in Awe of Our Mother Earth

A peaceful little oasis in midtown Manhattan

I pray that you are well and well-rested as time has “fallen back.” I am doing very well, and I’m elated by the fact that President Obama has been re-elected. While no human, president or government is perfect, I truly believe he was the better choice and, thankfully, many of you agreed.

On the flipside of my happiness about the election, my heart is feeling very heavy for my brothers and sisters in my home city of New York, and all of the ...

Odu Reflection: You’re Not Waiting in Vain

Posted by Funlayo on Friday, August 31, 2012, In : Reflection

Alaafia from Gainesville, family! The sands of summer have slowly slipped through our fingers and the time has come to get back to the grind. Time flies when you’re having fun, eh? I’m blessed to be spending the semester down in the sunshine state as a visiting student at the University of Florida’s Center for African Studies. The welcome and the weather have both been quite warm and I’ve hit the ground running: studying Yoruba, writing, and reading for my upcoming comprehensive e...

E kurole o! (Good evening!) I pray you’re all doing exceptionally well and that those of you who may have traveled to visit family this past weekend enjoyed yourselves and had smooth, safe travels. Did you get my email message on Thursday? If not, be sure to join Ase Ire's newly improved mailing list to make sure you don't miss any of my special messages and posts.

This week I was reflecting on some of the various people who have passed through my ...

Messages from Egun (Ancestors): Psalm 58

Blessed greetings all! I pray you have all been very well since we last "met". I have been re-adjusting to life on this side of the pond after spending the summer in Naijiria (Nigeria), getting back into the swing of graduate school and preparing for the changing of the seasons. I have also recently moved, which means re-setting my altars and assessing the energies in my new space. It seems to be full of light energy, adupe! (we give thanks!)

This morning, I was si...

Riding on Mother’s Back

Posted by 'Funlayo on Sunday, September 4, 2011, In : Reflection

E kaaro
(good morning) from Massachusetts! I’m back in ilu Amerika and feeling very blessed to begin my 32nd ride around the sun today. I’m spending this birthday weekend with two of my favorite people –my parents – and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with sista-friends to break bread and laugh lots later on this evening. So much fun to have and love to share!

As I knelt in prayer this morning, I began to reflect on all the beautiful babies I saw riding their mother’s backs ...

Back to Basics

E ku ile o!
(Greetings to you at home) E ku ise o! (Greetings to you who are working) I pray that you are all very well and that you are feeling bright. I am very excited to be writing to you from Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yorùbá civilization. I’ve been here at Obafemi Awolowo University studying Yorùbá language and culture for the last two weeks and I’m blessed to be here for the remainder of the summer enjoying all that Yorùbáland has to offer with my friends and colleagues. Standing at the Crossroads

Happy Weekend fam! I hope you’re all doing well today and getting things accomplished. Whatever it may be – large, small, or in between – it feels good to achieve goals and check things off the “to do” list. I’m finishing out my first year of grad school (wait… it’s been a year already? Wow!) and preparing to move into a new place so there’s lots on my list, but, thankfully, it’s all coming along.

I was recently talking to ...

(Wo)Man in the Mirror

Se daadaa ni? (Is all well with you?) I pray that you all have peace & good feelings swirling within and around you as we move from the weekend into another week. Anyone who is close to me knows of my love for Michael Jackson’s (iba e) music. Whatever earthly frailties he may have exhibited, his music spoke volumes on so many themes: love, peace, understanding and of course, getting down and having a good time!

What I learned from a Banana

Blessed greetings! You know, our teachers come in many forms – they don’t always have to be people. I’ve learned a whole lot of things watching the tide roll in, watching birds hop and flit about and, most recently, I learned something from carrying a banana in my tote bag.

Bananas have thick skin – or so it seems. But if you ever carry a banana in your bag you’ll realize just how delicate they actually are. Upon pulling it out after as...

Relax, Relate, Release!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, In : Reflection

Blessed greetings! I pray the day is treating you well. I've been busy, busy, busy getting ready for my big move to Massachusetts on Friday so I've been off the blog grid for a few days. If you've missed the posts, remember you can always get daily doses of inspiration from Ase Ire's Facebook or Twitter pages.

In the midst of all the preparation and excitement, I managed to take a few days to unwind in the beautiful Pocono mountains with my family. We had a lovely time relaxing, conne...

Odu Reflection: When Helter Isn't Skelter

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, In : Reflection

Ever feel like life is spinning out of control? At one moment or another, I think we all have and it’s not a good feeling. But sometimes, we need that spin out, that commotion, that… raw energy to take us out of our comfort zone, to make us take a good look at our current situation and to help us muster the courage to make necessary changes.

Recently, the odù Ifá Ogunda Otura was revealed during a divination session at which I was present. My mentor explained that this odù is k...

Clearing Away the..."Stuff"

Posted by 'Funlayo on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, In : Reflection

I had a great time at the United Nations on Saturday. Hearing from the likes of Dr. Majid Ali and Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely (pictured above with ’Funlayo) was wonderfully enriching and I was blessed to have an informative vision during the shamanic drumming portion of the program. All in all, a lovely, lovely morning!

Later in the day, I relaxed by the pool with a copy of Spirituality & Health Magazine (which I picked up at the conference) and I read something that really resonate...

Buff Yourself to a Shine!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, In : Reflection

Blessed greetings Ase Ire family! I pray, as always, that this day finds you well. I feel blessed to have had such a fantastic weekend celebrating my Masters graduation with dinner at Brazil Brazil and a fun day at Spa Castle -- this place is great and one of New York's best kept secrets, check it out sometime!
It's interesting how even the simplest, most ordinairy actions can provoke deep thoughts. This morning, I was riding in the car with my mom and I began to buff my nails. As I buf...

Balancing Spiritual Needs with Physical Desires

Posted by 'Funlayo on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, In : Reflection

Hello and happy Tuesday! As I mentioned in the last post, one of the ways to enter our Spring Giveaway (now underway until May 31st!) is to post a discussion question, comment or suggestion on our Facebook fan page. We've gotten a few great questions so far and one was quite timely because it was something that I had recently been thinking about. The question was:

How can you balance your carnal wants versus your spiritual needs?

I recently spoke about my love of travel and 2 weeks ago I ...

Odu Reflection: The Past is Present!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, In : Reflection

I pray this day finds you well! As you regular readers know, I do a lot of reflecting on things and I’ve been particularly introspective lately. It seems that the more I look inward, the more the universe sends people to ask me the right questions – the “right” questions being those that allow me to look even deeper into myself.  One question I’m often asked is: “Why do you study history? What are you going to do with that?” As I look within for the answer, my response is ...

I pray you’ve been enjoying this Black History Month as much as I have and that you’ve learned at least a few things you didn’t know before from my posts on the Facebook page and Twitter and from the great widget on the site that I snagged from Biography.com’s wonderful Black History site. It’s unfortunate, but observing Black History Month has become somewhat of a mixed bag for me. I personally commemorate and cherish Black history every day, because as ...

Turning Mourning into Morning

1980                                        2009

This post is dedicated to the memory of my father John E. Wood
September 13, 1950 - January 18, 2010

This New Year, 2010, has certainly gotten off to a dichotomous start for many of us, hasn’t it? There have been immense blessings on one hand, immense tumult and melancholy on the other. While I and those of you reading this are blessed in that we’re still here, still in our right minds, still able to try again to achieve whatever ...

This holy day season has been a lot of fun for me indeed, and I pray that it has for you as well. I enjoyed some Hanukkah festivities, participated in a beautiful candlelight ceremony on the Winter Solstice, will commune with my largely Christian family on Christmas day today and am looking forward to lighting the Kinara for Kwanzaa tomorrow. It's beautiful when we can all join together and see that our sameness and the values and principles we share far outweigh...

Odu Reflection: The Blessings Will Come!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Sunday, November 29, 2009, In : Reflection

With Thanksgiving just behind us and the end of the year approaching, I and many people around the country and the world are reflecting on the past year and taking inventory of our blessings. With all this gratitude and good tidings abounding, I was reminded of a quote that seems quite incongruous with those feelings:

"Over generosity is often met with crass ingratitude"

This is a refrain from the odù Ifá Ogunda-Obara, which I recently reviewed with my Master-Teacher Awo Ifakunle....

Are You a Tourist or a Native?

This mosaic is from the Art for Transit collection designed for the MTA, see more here

Riding public transportation in New York can be a real trip! While I’m certainly looking forward to (finally!) getting my driver’s license and getting a car, public transportation is environmentally friendly and it gives me a lot of time to think and reflect on things. Another thing riding the buses and subways enables me to do is people watch – and watch I do.

One thing that always strikes me i...

You never know Who's Listening

Posted by 'Funlayo on Friday, October 9, 2009, In : Reflection

Reflective Question:
Have you ever overheard someone saying something negative about you? How did you handle the situation?

Let’s be honest: most of us gain some satisfaction out of talking about people once in a while. It may not be enlightened but it’s the truth. Every now and then, talking about the person we saw acting wild on the train, the “cat lady” that lives down the street or the “bad” child that made a scene in the store gives us some small bit of sadistic pleasure a...

Fall is definitely here in full effect! I love to watch the trees change color and, while I’m definitely a summer baby I must admit that the crisp coolness of the fall air is quite refreshing. It’s funny that people who don’t know each other and don’t really have anything to say to each other usually fall back on talking about the weather. While most people dismiss this as meaningless “small talk,” I see something deeper. The weather is one of the few thi...

It Could Always Be Worse!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, In : Reflection

Isn’t that the LAST thing you want to hear when things aren’t quite going your way? *laugh*

Much as we may not like to hear it sometimes, the reality is it’s always true! Even when we find ourselves in dark, undesirable situations some bit of light – no matter how small – manages to shine through and restore us. We have to be careful of focusing so much on the darkness that we miss that little bit of light in the distance.

Yesterday, I was standing on the train platform and a mot...

Uh-Oh!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Sunday, September 6, 2009, In : Reflection

Do you tend to assume the worst? When someone – particularly a boss or other authority figure – says “May I speak to you?” do you immediately think the conversation will be a negative one and spend time trying to figure out what you’ve done wrong?

We all experience these moments of negative thinking and self-doubt, it’s natural. But I’ve found that getting into these types of negative thought loops on a regular basis really stems from an underestimation of your skills and talent...

Quieting the "Shouldas"

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, In : Reflection

Greetings again! I thought I’d take 2 steps on this first day, start the journey off right *smile*

Over the past few months, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the fact that I’m going to celebrate my 30th birthday this Friday. I feel incredibly blessed to have lived 30 years because, the grim reality is, many people in the world don’t. I also feel blessed to have been afforded the opportunities to accomplish as much as I have in my short time on this physical plane.

Although I hav...
