What I learned from a Fortune Cookie

Posted by Funlayo on Saturday, March 9, 2013, In : Inspiration

Alaafia family! I must say that the first quarter of 2013 has been phenomenal for me and I pray that your year is also beginning in a wonderful way. I would like to take a moment to thank the the fantastic group who participated in our Spiritual Journey to Peru in January -- they truly embodied the power of positivity. Soon, I’ll be revamping the website to include a travel section and I’ll look forward to seeing some of you on future trips. Speaking of which, if you’re interested in ...

E pele o family! As always, I hope that this message finds you well and bright. While my posts on the site haven’t been as frequent lately – don’t worry, that will change once the semester is over – many of you are keeping in touch with me on facebook and twitter and I thank you for your energy! I also offer a hearty thanks to those of you who attended Sacred Healing & Wholeness in Africa & the Americas, the Symposium that I hosted at Ha...

You Are Black Gold (With a Diamond Soul)

Posted by Funlayo on Monday, March 26, 2012, In : Inspiration

Blessings and more blessings, family. Like so many of us, my heart has been hurting over the loss of our young brother Trayvon Martin, as well as over the deaths of Rebia Boyd, Shaima Alawadi and all of those who have been slain in acts of violence and discrimination in the past weeks. I pray light and elevation on their souls and that the orisa Ogun and Sango deliver swift justice where justice is due. Ase.

I knew that I could not let these events pass by without saying something, but w...

Se alaafia ni, family? I pray this message finds you each well and bright. Things are busy in a wonderful way on my end. I’m working on a few special projects that I’m really excited about, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you in upcoming posts. In the meantime, do save the date for a special symposium I’ll be hosting next April. It seems like a ways away but it’ll be here before we know it.

Remember this post where I t...

New Year, Same You!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Sunday, January 2, 2011, In : Inspiration

Happy 2011! I pray that you were able to ring it in doing something fun! I took a wonderful white bath, said my prayers and then spent the rest of the night drinking hot cocoa, eating homemade biscuits with tupelo honey butter and laughing like crazy with my oldest brother. It was a relaxed yet fun-filled evening just like I wanted. Laughter is a great way to start – or finish! – just about anything.

I have to admit, although the celebratio...

Taking the "Hi" Road

Posted by 'Funlayo on Monday, November 29, 2010, In : Inspiration

I had a wonderful time laughing and, of course, eating with my loved ones last week! I pray that those of you who chose to commune with those close to you had a fantastic time. There is never a wrong time to gather together and express gratitude for each other and for all the blessings we have each been afforded.

Whenever I go home to New York and then come back to the Boston/Cambridge area, I'm struck by the difference in people's attitude...

The Art of Self-Soothing in 3 Steps

Posted by 'Funlayo on Thursday, October 21, 2010, In : Inspiration

I’m allllll about positivity. I’m also about keeping it real so I’m going to let you all in all a little secret – it’s not always rose petals and sunshine over here! *laugh* Life is life and we all have our moments when frustration, anxiety, anger and other completely natural emotions rear their heads. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with experiencing or expressing our emotions – we’d be less than human if we didn’t – but...

The Joy of Being Comfortably Uncomfortable

Posted by 'Funlayo on Saturday, September 18, 2010, In : Inspiration

Blessed greetings! Ba wo ni? (How are things?) I pray, as always, that you are well and bright as you read this. I’m just about settled into my new digs and I was blessed to celebrate my birthday with good friends at the beautiful New England Aquarium and Boston Harbor (pictured above) earlier this month.

I have hit the ground running with my PhD work! It is truly exhilarating to be around so many bright, interesting and diverse people – part of why I love being with all of you here...

A Whole New World

Posted by 'Funlayo on Thursday, July 22, 2010, In : Inspiration

Blessed greetings! I've been getting a lot of mail from readers lately and I must say E SE PUPO (THANK YOU VERY MUCH) for your support and for reaching out! Ase Ire is all about good feelings and knowledge so nothing makes me happier than to hear that my words have inspired someone or taught him or her something.

One of the letters I got recently was from a reader who is a Iyawo, or a new initiate into the Ifá-Òrìsà tradition. The period following initiation -- or any major life change...

Getting back Behind the Wheel

Posted by 'Funlayo on Saturday, July 10, 2010, In : Inspiration

The weekend is here! I pray you’ve all had a wonderful week and got much accomplished. Like many native New Yorkers, I did not get my driver’s license as a teen. I am, however, very proud to announce that I took and passed my road test on the first go ‘round and got my license yesterday – that's the celebratory rose petals on the dashboard up above – watch out road!

The path to me getting my license was long and winding. I learned how to drive when I was living in Florida, on ...

Quote for the Day: Your Deeds Speak

Posted by 'Funlayo on Thursday, July 1, 2010, In : Inspiration

An unknown author said:
The words we say will teach if we practice what we preach
I came across this quote today and it really spoke to me (pun intended! *laugh*); a recent incident led me to reflect on how often we are surrounded by those who tell rather than showing and whose words and actions don't match up. When words and deeds are incongruent, the deeds will always speak louder and will undermine the words no matter how flowery and eloquent the words may be. It is said that words have...

Please Don't Stop the Music

Posted by 'Funlayo on Thursday, May 20, 2010, In : Inspiration

Alaafia! I pray the day is treating you well. I had such a beautiful experience this past Sunday; I just had to share it with all of you. Aside from volunteering at the AIDS Walk (you can still donate until June 4th, by the way!) which was great fun, a good friend of mine invited me to a musical recital. This was no ordinary recital, however, it was a beautiful and extraordinary display and testament to the power of music to do wonderful things within people.

Happy Black Girl Day!

Blessed greetings all! I hope you're all doing well on this (finally!) warm day in New York or wherever you may be. I've got a lot of great things to share with you all including the recipes I promised -- who's still fastingwith me? -- but I found out about something too good not to share today so all the rest will have to wait.

I came across a great blog entitled "The Beautiful Struggler" by a young woman who goes b...

You're invited to Fast with 'Funlayo

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, In : Inspiration

Alaafia and blessed greetings to you, I pray you are well and feeling bright as you read this – I certainly am! I’m still in the ritual mourning period for my birth father, but I am remembering him with love and laughter and I have already dreamt of him, which is quite comforting. In the midst of my bereavement, I have received some exciting news that I know my father would be proud of: I’ve been offered admission to Harvard University’s PhD program in African and African America...

Happy 2010!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Saturday, January 2, 2010, In : Inspiration

I pray that 2010 has gotten off to a wonderful start for all of you. For the first time in my life, I spent New Year’s Eve alone at home and it was a wonderful, wonderful thing! I partook in a delicious candlelight dinner, a cleansing white bath and a whole lot of prayer and reflection. 2009 was a year of a lot of accomplishments for me – including launching Ase Ire! – and I look forward to more great things in this new decade.

I found a little poem by Edgar Guest that captures my ...

Help Me Help Somone this Holy-day Season

Posted by 'Funlayo on Saturday, December 19, 2009, In : Inspiration

My Ghanaian brother, John, and me in Elmina, Ghana -- 2005

I pray this day finds you all well and bright as we move further into this season of endings, beginnings and much reflection. I have been extremely introspective over the past few weeks and one of the things that continually comes into my mind is the thought of all those who are less fortunate than myself. At this time of year, many tend to increase their charitable giving – both temporal and monetary – and, while it is a wonde...

Cherish Today!

Posted by 'Funlayo on Monday, November 23, 2009, In : Inspiration

Image found here

I was looking through the children’s books in the City College bookstore the other day. I’m a big kid at heart, and I also have a beautiful niece and nephew who I love to buy books for. Children’s books are always so beautiful and positive – many adults would probably benefit from reading a child’s book every now and then!

Children experience a lot more negative talk than we may realize – they’re often being dictated to, threatened and stifled in many ways...

Quote for the Day: Overcoming

Posted by 'Funlayo on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, In : Inspiration

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it."

I came across this quote by Helen Keller today and it struck me – hard. I woke up not feeling 100% well physically, but I decided that I was going to push through and accomplish the things that I had set to accomplish for the day. Now, my little sore throat and headache was nothing in comparison to the physical hardships faced by Keller and others, but it was a small sampling of my own power and drive to ov...
